Heralds of the Gospel of Hope
Dear Friends of the New York Province Jesuits,
To be a Jesuit is, above all, learning to live in God's presence. Such a life challenges us to pray, to love as Christ loved and to make practical decisions in the light of the gospel message.
Jesus, in his outreach, transcended boundaries and definitions. Jesuits, as they follow Christ bearing his cross today, strive to announce his Gospel of hope in all places and to all peoples. We are called not only to bring direct help to people in distress, but also to restore human persons in their integrity by reconciling them with God and one another. The service of faith and promotion of justice is carried out in many ways, and includes the education of youth, intellectual research, reaching out to refugees and the spiritual development and care of persons through the promotion of the Spiritual Exercises.
It is essential then that Jesuits in formation receive deep, strong and vibrant spiritual direction and the professional training needed for ministry in today’s world. This year alone, more than $1.6 million was budgeted for formation purposes. Will you please offer your prayers and much needed financial support for those who are presently preparing for ministry as priests and brothers? Will you please consider a gift this year before our fiscal year ends on June 30th?
Preparation for work in our various apostolates is thorough, necessary and expensive. Novices Ricardo Avila and Patrick Nolan, who are completing their second year at St. Andrew Hall, our novitiate in Syracuse, recently worked for several months at Xavier High School in Micronesia. In August, they will profess first vows in the Society of Jesus and continue on to graduate work. Mario Tomi Subardjo, S.J., from Indonesia and Lin Yaw Mana, S.J., from Myanmar are also teachers at Xavier in Chuuk. As part of their Jesuit formation, all four will earn master’s degrees in various disciplines and complete four years of theology studies prior to ordination.
Mr. Ben Brenkert, S.J., just completed his degree work in Philosophy and Social Work and is about to begin his regency as a teacher at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City. He recently reflected: “First Studies taught me something very significant about being a Jesuit: in our courses of study and formation we are animated towards the frontiers, and, in our companionship as brothers and in our collaboration with lay men and women, we see faith and justice work towards the creation of the Kingdom of God.”
In June we shall rejoice as we celebrate the ordination to the priesthood of Rev. Mr. John P. Mulreany, S.J., and Rev. Mr. Robert J. Pecoraro, S. J. Both joined the Jesuits ten years ago. Thanks in large part to your support over all these years, they will go forward now in a newly graced way to be heralds of Christ’s Gospel of hope.
Since entering the Society in 2000, Mr. Mulreany, S.J., completed a Master of Arts degree in philosophy, was assigned to Xavier High School in New York for regency, completed a Master of Divinity degree, did pastoral ministry at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute and worked in China and Southern Sudan. He has served as a deacon and following ordination will continue working on a Licentiate in Sacred Theology.
As a Jesuit, Mr. Pecoraro, S.J., earned a Master’s degree in Social Philosophy, was assigned to Cristo Rey New York High School for his regency and during summers he studied to earn a Master’s degree in Catholic Education Leadership. Currently he is completing a Master of Divinity and a Theological Master’s degree. He has also served as a deacon and following ordination will do a pastoral year at a parish.
Jesuits know that our benefactors make it possible for us to be best prepared for ministry as members of the Society of Jesus. On behalf of all in the Province who have benefited from your generosity and continue to be the recipients of your prayers and support, I thank you most sincerely.
May the Holy Spirit guide you each day.
Gratefully in our Lord,
Rev. James F. Keenan, S.J.
Director of Development
