Collecting Funds for Sandy Recovery
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the New York Province of the Society of Jesus has received numerous requests from people and organizations around the country seeking to assist members of our local school communities most directly affected by the storm. After consulting with local school officials, it is clear that a tremendous need exists. Approximately 100 students and families require temporary housing in the short-term, and a significant number of them will need long-term housing support as their homes were destroyed by flood waters and/or fire. In response, the New York Province is accepting monetary donations to help students and their families, as well as faculty or staff and their families, affected by the storm at St. Peter’s Prep and Xavier High School.
In addition to supporting high school families and staff,
through the efforts of the staff and Board at Mount Manresa Retreat Center in
Staten Island, some rooms have been made available as a site for FEMA to
provide housing and services to families and relief workers. Another wing of
Manresa is being reserved for families associated with our apostolates who may
